I last met 5131J in flesh in Patek Philippe Salon in Geneva sometime ago. It is the most difficult Patek Philippe to buy new at the moment. If one is sent to auction houses, the estimate would be in seven-digit, more than 200% of the list price. As such, I must thank the owner of this piece for his generosity, lending it to us for photo and let me toy with it as I like.

In 2000, Patek Philippe revived their world time watch with Ref 5110, and subsequently created 5130 plus 5131J and 5131G with cloisonne enamel world map on the dial. The pieces look like the works of Louis Cottier, the greastest name in the genre, yet the system is all new. A pusher located at the upper left of the case controls the world’s only mechanism that sets the time zone ring, 24-hour ring and the hours hand jumping simultaneously. By correcting the positions of the hometown before use, the piece requires no more setting no matter where the wearer goes. For example, at 12 am I just board a London bound plane. I take out the watch, press the pusher until Hong Kong is placed at the top. I then pull the crown and set the time, and go to sleep. 13 hours later the plane lands in Heathrow, all I need to do is to press the button until London appears at the top. I can immediately see the local time: 5 am, as well as the time of Hong Kong(1 pm) via the 24-hour ring. Later I take another flight to Geneva, I just need to press the pusher once to change to Paris, which is in the same time zone as my destination. It is that easy. It is that clever. Do I need to say more ? No, I would not, as I need to concentrate on admiring the gorgeous dial.

This pair of watches have a similar world time mechanism, and both brands have applied it to a wide range of models. Both watches have an additional crown on the left for bi-directionally set the time zone ring which rotates continuously. The inner 24-hour ring which runs with the hours hand has clear indications for day and night.

World Time + Alarm

The reason for putting these two pieces together is obvious: both of them carry alarm function, a useful thing for globetrotters. With a fixed 24-hour ring, Vulcain’s Revolution GMT can be dubbed “world time on demand”. What does it mean? For example, at noon you are in the Statue Square, wondering the time at London’s Trafalgar Square. Turn the time zone ring to point Hong Kong at 12pm and you get the answer. 12 hours later you’ve flown to Tokyo and when sitting under the Tower, you turn the ring to point Tokyo at 12am to find out the time at Paris’s Eiffel Tower. On top of the brand’s exclusive feature that a single crown can wind for both time and alarm, the piece also houses the first self-winding “Cricket” movement in 60 years.
